SANGHA NIGHT: Celebrating the Autumn Equinox

The autumnal equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator on its apparent journey southward, and we experience a day and a night that are of equal duration. So for the moment nature is in balance. It is a time to reap what you have sown in the spring, of giving thanks for the harvest and the bounty the Earth provides. It is a time for finishing up old projects and plans. Mabon as it was known is a time of celebration and balance. We’ll meditate and reflect on the time and do a puja. Bring acorns (and other autumnal fruits) and dried (clean!) leaves as offerings.

Mindfulness and Drama

Mindfulness and drama go hand in hand and are inextricably linked, an integral part of each other.

Acting is a form of mindfulness. In mindfulness without judgement, we simply observe what is happening both physically and emotionally. Noting, identifying thoughts with an eye to detail. What actors are doing is being aware of what is happening around them, their physical senses, the emotions that are coming, their thoughts and words pass through them in service of a character. The more aware an actor can be the more they can portray a character more effectively.

During this workshop we will explore how Mindfulness and Drama can be used as a useful tool in our Dharma practice through various exercises connecting through our imagination with body, mind and heart.

So much of Buddhism can be explored through Drama. Come along and see!

The Courage to Teach

At this 2nd gathering we’ll be exploring learning styles and the art of asking good questions. What is our own learning style and how does it impact our teaching? What about how our students learn? How can we design and carry out teaching that meets the various styles of our students? How do we get curious alongside our students? How do we support them to open to their direct experience in ways that lead to self-discovery and insight?

Please join us for this 2nd gathering, out of 6 being offered over the next year. You do not need to have participated in our first gathering to attend.

Open to any and all Order members and GFR mitras already teaching or interested in starting to teach.

Please bring lunch to share. Dana contributions will be welcome.

Women’s class - every second Saturday of the Month

Women’s class with guest speakers:

14 Sept - We will have Amaragita as guest for the first time. Drawing on her ‘Mandala of resilience’ work, she will facilitate a workshop physically mapping out and moving around a mandala to help bring awareness and clarity to different aspects of our lives and practice. Highly recommended.

12 Oct - Dhiraprabha will talk about the theme of ‘home’. As Bhante said: ‘Commitment is primary, context is secondary’ - it’s not about what our situation is but what that means to us and how our relationship with home supports our practice. Dhiraprabha and Karunagita will have an informal interview/ conversation on the subject and then broaden out to reflection and discussion. Do join us, whatever your situation. Other event to mention: Karunagita will be giving a talk in the morning of the 12 Oct on 'Going forth' which is related to women's class topic; start 11.30am

9 Nov - There is an event for Mitras and Order Members at the NLBC this afternoon so there will be no women’s class in Nov. However, do come anyway – Dhammamegha will be doing the monthly public talk at 11.30 and you are welcome to bring and share lunch and, if you are a Mitra or considering becoming one, do join us for the afternoon.
